千の風になって / Akikaw Msafumi
This Masafumi’s 5th CD, and his biggest hit ever. Although release in May 2006, this single hit #1 on Oricon charts in January 2007 with low sales of 30,000 approximately, but the long chart life of the single helped it to hit 1,000,000 (as for 01.08.2007) and becoming the number 1 single in 2007 so far. So, what’s about this single? Is it really that good?
track 1 : 千の風になって
The song opens with a nice piano melody, followed by Masafumi sining in a really really great & relaxing voice. Oh, I forgot to tell you he’s a tenor singer, so his voice is 100% strong lol. There’s nothing special musically, simple music, no complications… it’s a good way of showing Masafumi’s voice. But the song focuses mainly on the lyrics, which are from an old Japanese poem.
“Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.”
It’s very touching, especially if you have a close friend/relative that passed away….So yes, the main thing about the single/song is these beautiful, yet, sad lyrics.. this single was made to comfort Japan, and apparently, it Did!
Rating: 8.5 / 10
track 2 : リンゴ追分
Although it didn’t get as much exposure as 「千の風になって」 which is obviously because it’s a B-Side song lol :p
but I like it very much! It’s more like a traditional song, with traditional music & lyrics. Nothing big for the lyrics this time but the music is catchy (not POP catchy btw >.> ).
リンゴ追分 takes you in a magical trip to old Japan, but you won’t see Samurais :p
千の風なって is a “Must Get” Single if you’re into classical music, it’s very relaxing, very gentle on ears lol
I guarantee you, even if you’re not that much into classical music, you’ll experience another atmosphere of music, away from the cheap pop music of these days :p
A THOUSAND WINDS’ IMPACT:
Masafumi, you sure won’t be leaving soon!!
