American Band “Weezer” to cover a BoA’s “Meri-Kuri”

Weezer is a Grammy nominated American rock band from Los Angeles, California formed in 1992 by Rivers Cuomo (lead vocals, guitar), Patrick Wilson (drums, backing vocals), Matt Sharp (bass, backing vocals), and Jason Cropper (guitar, backing vocals), with the last two replaced by Mikey Welsh and Brian Bell, respectively. Mikey Welsh was later replaced with Scott Shriner. They have released five full-length albums, three EPs, and a DVD; the first album was later re-released as a remastered deluxe edition. Weezer covering BoA?

American rock band Weezer is releasing the Japanese version of “The Red Album” this Wednesday. Like the other international versions planned for
release, one of the bonus tracks will be a cover of a local artist. It has now been revealed that the Japanese version will feature a cover of BoA’s ballad “Merikuri.”

Cuomo -the lead vocalist- said that he was instantly taken by the song [Meri-Kuri]. The song will -unfortunately- be present only on the Japanese version of the Album.

Also worth mentioning:

Recent polls & TV shows showed the huge impact that Meri Kuri had on the Japanese public. The song was voted as one of the most beautiful Winter Songs ever in Japan. It was featured on BoA’s Greatest Hits Album “Best of Soul”

every year in Japan since 2005 the songs keeps playing in malls and stores, i do play it even in summer sometimes
not to mention, ALL my friends who doesn’t listen to JPOP says that this song is the best song ever by BoA ((well i play BoA’s songs alot around them))
yeah i have some of them sometimes say ” zouttu ZOUTTU ” XD
i can’t wait to hear this covered song, and for sure since it is coming up this wednesday our 1ST next week e-mail will have both this song and VIVID single in there ((OK karimu you got work to do :P))

  3. karimu says:

^ The cover is pretty bad actually XD They’re singing in Japanese with some disturbing rock instrumentals on the background. I’m kinda disappointed, though I only heard a 30 sec preview :p

  4. aizmov says:

no one can cover Merikuri, AND I SAY NO ONE
well who remembers last year’s Music Fair 21 ? there was someone who sung Merikuri with BoA, yeah she couldn’t pull it
who watched last week HEY! HEY! HEY! ?!!! yeah that Opera woman DID BAD JOB on the song, i liked it a bit at the end but yeah BoA is WAY BETTER
lol, this song made to be sung by BoA and only BoA, i doubt anyone will cover it as good, i saw people trayin’ and i see no one will do XD

  7. aizmov says:

BoA mentioned that that woman’s vocals were AMAZING, but i found it NOT >_>

  8. jefry says:

i love merikuri. but i prefer winter love.
    guess it’s just me^^

  9. aizmov says:

Winter Love is dear to me, but Merikuri is a legend to me XD

Cover songs can go both ways. The song can be “universal”, as in, many artists can cover it and some of them may do a good job. The song can be “selective”, as in, the song only sounds best for whom it was written for, unless the cover artist does one helluva job rearranging it.

Merikuri is a “selective” song to me, as Boa is the best artist to sing it. So I can’t really blame Weezer… but at the same time, it’s WEEZER. I dunno about you guys, but I don’t particularly like them. They had a few songs I liked and were pretty good back in the day, but now, they’ve got an album that’s selling for a mere $5 compared to newcomers selling at $7-8 and popular artists selling at $10+.

But then again, the same thing can be said about Boa. I’ve heard her do a great cover song (Ain’t No Sunshine was brilliant… but that is a “universal” song). But I’ve also heard her do poorly in someone else’s song (Flying Without Wings was just bad… even though she wasn’t technically covering it… putting her voice next to Westlife really did her no justice whatsoever… but yeah, that’s a “selective” song).
